We were delighted to invite Joy Dempsey to open the new build, incorporating a suite of English classrooms, last Wednesday.
Joy was a student at the school 2007 – 2014 studying both English Language and Literature at A level. She was Head Girl (2013 – 2014) and has recently graduated from Oxford University, having studied English Literature. It was fitting to hear from someone with such strong ties to both the school and the English Department. Joy spoke about the importance of schools providing space for students to grow, learn and flourish. She also reminded us of the importance of English in developing articulate, thoughtful students and future leaders. Her speech inspired everyone from returning students, trustees and governors, to the architects and design team. It was very special to see two previous Head teachers: Mrs Jones and Mrs Shackleton returning for this occasion, as well as David Robinson, who served as a governor for 28 years. Guests enjoyed musical performances from Elizabeth (Year 9), Emma (Year 12), and Nyah (Year 8) in addition to hearing Joy's powerful speech. The ribbon was cut and all our guests had the opportunity to visit the new rooms, see the photographic record of the building works and enjoy the space.
